Featuring the most advanced electrostatic technology in decades, Audeze proudly introduces the CRBN electrostatic headphone (pronounced “carbon”), built using their all new Patent-pending carbon nanotube film. CRBN is lightweight and comfortable, has an excellent dynamic range, presents accurate low frequencies and pairs beautifully with our top of the line Blue Hawaii Special Edition!
“CRBN features a new Patent-pending polymer film with suspended carbon nanotubes to eliminate problems commonly found in previous electrostatic designs. Originally developed for MRI medical applications, we’ve adapted those innovations for the audiophile version of CRBN, which top audio professionals have called the best sounding electrostatic headphone to-date.”
Designed with Purpose
Audeze originally developed this new technology working with Prof. Mark S. Cohen Ph.D., UCLA School of Medicine and his team, for use in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Typical ferrous metals could not be used, so they had to develop a new material, and that led them to patent a special thin film with suspended carbon nanotubes. Which solves the problems associated with lamination and deposition on the film.
Carbon Nanotube Technology
The CRBN driver includes a revolutionary ultra-thin diaphragm with carbon nanotubes suspended inside the material – unlike other electrostatic diaphragms, there is no coating. Because the charge is distributed throughout the film, this results in a uniform driving force that reduces distortion and improves clarity, resolution and transparency.
Electrostatic headphones have a reputation for less than stellar bass response. The Audeze solution to this well-known issue involves several angles.
- CRBN’s stators are made using a proprietary PCB manufacturing technique that allows us to achieve high rigidity, uniform thickness and consistent flatness, which is important for equal force distribution and linear response.
- The perforation of the stator is optimized for excellent high frequency extension and its conductive surface is specially coated to ensure high dielectric strength, allowing for an open airy sound while maintaining high efficiency and durability.
- The Carbon Nanotube diaphragm allows them to achieve high efficiency by holding more charge and preventing charge migration.
- Which allows for a reduction in diaphragm tension and increase the space between the stator and diaphragm, which provides for higher excursion and lower resonant frequency without the risk of the diaphragm coming into contact with the stator.
- This low resonant frequency, combined with a large diaphragm surface area, acoustically transparent damping material, and custom designed earpads provide extremely well-extended bass response down to 20Hz.
As a result, CRBN is transparent and highly resolving across the entire audible spectrum, with excellent transient response, sparkling clarity, and bass response that’s unmatched in the electrostatic arena. Another example of Audeze’s commitment to Uncompromised Audio.
Supreme Comfort
CRBN offers supreme comfort with its lightweight construction. At 300 grams, the minimalist design features materials such as magnesium and carbon fiber, which shaves off every gram while maintaining strength. The earpads are extra plush and slightly oversized, for a great seal and pillow-soft, cranium-cradling comfort.
